A Neuroaffirming Approach to Mortgage Broking
As a mortgage broker, I know that navigating the financial world can be overwhelming for many, but it can be even more challenging for those who are neurodivergent. My personal experience as a parent to a 9-year-old with autism has shaped my approach to creating a neuro-friendly process in mortgage broking. By fostering an environment that promotes understanding and support, creating a safe space for accommodations and adjustments, and understanding the differences between each clients experience, I aim to empower my clients to achieve their financial goals with confidence.
I recognise and respect the diverse ways that individuals think and communicate. In the context of mortgage brokering, this means adapting my communication style, providing clear and simple information, and being patient and understanding throughout the process. Some of these things feel like common sense but can make a huge difference in how comfortable and confident my clients are with their financial journey. These changes benefit not only those who need them, they can work as best practice for neurotypical people as well.
- Clear Communication: I prioritise clarity in my explanations. Financial jargon can be confusing, especially for those who struggle with abstract concepts. By breaking down complex terms into relatable language, I ensure my clients understand every step of the mortgage process.
- Visual Aids and Tools: Many neurodivergent people are visual learners. I use drawings of houses and loans to illustrate financial concepts and loan options. This not only makes information more accessible but also helps clients visualize their financial journey. A follow up email with notes from our meeting is provided, so you can go back over the details later if needed.
- Structured Process: Creating a structured and predictable process is vital. I lay out each step of the mortgage application and approval process in a clear timeline. This allows clients to prepare mentally for what’s to come, reducing anxiety associated with uncertainty.
- Sensory-Friendly Environment: I strive to create a calm office atmosphere, which can be particularly beneficial for clients with sensory sensitivities. This includes reducing noise levels and providing a comfortable space where clients feel safe, focused and able to advocate for their needs and wants.
- Multiple check in points: I check in with my clients’ multiple times before we move to the next step or topic, to ensure any questions have been answered, and they are comfortable with moving forwards. For ADHD or AuDHD, clients this can also mean keeping you on track and accountable with check ins on your home buying or documents collection progress.
- No Judgement or Gatekeeping: I do not require an official diagnosis to support your accommodations. If you have a support, structure or sensory requirement that helps you navigate your day to day, it is welcome in my office and business. Neurodivergent accommodations rarely negatively impact the neurotypical experience, so it just makes sense to create a culture and process that supports those who need it more.
